Writing: musings and research

My PhD study was a case study of an orchestral composers school for advanced composer-students, led by eminent composer-teachers. It was hosted by a professional orchestra and went for 5 days. This is a brief report distributed that was to participants in the study. Orchestral composers school study brief reportOrchestral composers school study brief report (100.65 KB). Hi Karlin,

I am Ashley Tran, working with composer Graham Reynolds and Golden Hornet, an Austin, Texas-based non-profit and composer lab for the 21st century. We are calling on composers worldwide to submit a four-minute string quartet piece for inclusion in our annual String Quartet Smackdown -- a bracketed, NCAA tournament style competition which brings original string quartet compositions head-to-head in front of a live, participatory audience.

We're especially aiming to get an inclusive round of composers; getting diversity, getting international. We want to expand towards a variety of voices, and really try our best to reach out to find these less-represented groups and ultimately have them in on this opportunity. That is why we're reaching out to you. It would be wonderful if we had a composition of yours among the submissions.

There is no cost to enter or participate. The prize for the sixteen finalists is a professional in-studio recording of their submitted composition for their promotional use. The prize for the first place winner is US$1,500. Submissions are due by December 1st.

For more information and directions on how to submit, please visit bit.ly/smackdown5
Don't hesitate to reach out if there are any further questions.

I also wanted to ask you where that picture on your homepage is taken. It's absolutely beautiful!

Thank you for your time.

Hi Ashley, Apologies for not noticing your message in a timely manner! I haven't figured out how to get the comments to notify me. I've now set up a Contact form. Sounds like it was a great project. The photo you asked about is from Eddystone Point in Northeast Tasmania. I had a wonderful composer residency there. Kind regards, Karlin
